Nurses play crucial roles in the promotion of optimum health outcomes for the communities they serve. They collaborate with community members to implement strategies that align with community’s values, practices, expectations, and needs. In doing so, nurses utilize different models for program development. I would use the screening and health educator model when implementing community health progr
ams. The screening and health educator model recognizes the vital role that nurses and community health workers play in delivering screenings and health education to community members (Ruralhealthinfo.org, n.d.). Their role aims at promoting the health and wellbeing of the community members. The screenings and health education may focus on community issues such as chronic disease prevention, nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and home health and safety. I would adopt this model since it focuses on raising population’s awareness about their needs, how to meet them, and their abilities. Its effective use can also lead to sustained change and outcomes since it targets behavioral change among community members (Harrison et al., 2019). The model also empowers community members to take responsibility of meeting their diverse health-related needs.
Program sustainability and success are important when addressing community needs. One of the ways to achieve these outcomes is by ensuring the program addresses the actual community needs. This ensures relevance of the program to the community. The other approach is by aligning the program strategies with community expectations and resources. Alignment enables the use of the available resources to achieve optimum outcomes. The last strategy is active involvement of community members. Active involvement is an essential component that promotes ownership of the program by the community members. It also promotes sustainability since the adopted strategies align with the community expectations and needs (Alison, 2019).
